The practice of chiropractic focuses on a relationship between the structure of the body and the nervous system. The first step is taking a comprehensive health history, followed by a complete chiropractic, orthopedic, neurologic and physical examination. The exam may include palpation (examination by touch), x-rays, and range-of-motion and strength testing. Dr. Tollen will spend an average of one hour with a new patient, and thereafter the visits are normally twenty to thirty minutes in duration.
Once Dr. Tollen reviews his exam findings, he will discuss your condition and his recommended treatment plan with you. Dr. Tollen will begin chiropractic treatment on your first visit.
If Dr. Tollen recommends an adjustment as part of your treatment, he may use one or more of the following methods, depending on your condition: Activator, Thompson, Cox flexion/distraction; and Gonstead, full-spine diversified, and extremity adjustments. An adjustment may not be necessary on each visit.
Dr. Tollen may use therapeutic modalities such as electric-muscle-stimulation (TENS), ultrasound, ice, moist heat, and massage during your visit.
Dr. Tollen may prescribe an exercise or stretching program to enhance your care.
If you have a sports-related injury, Dr. Tollen may be able to help you. He is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner (CCSP). Sports chiropractors are doctors of chiropractic who have a specialized interest and post-graduate training in sports injuries and physical fitness.
