What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the Health Science that utilizes the bodyâ?(TM)s own innate healing power to help the patient return to health. Chiropractic champions a natural method of healing, advocating a non-surgical, non-invasive and drugless approach to treatment of patients. The central premise is that every organ, every muscle and every cell in the body is controlled via a signal directly from the brain. This signal tells the heart when to beat, the eyes how to focus on a new object and it tells you when you need more food or water. This signal tells you to cough if the air is bad, it helps you raise your hand to block the sun from your face and it helps you run fast when you are chasing a fly ball. This signal tells your stomach how much acid is needed to digest that big steak, it helps your kidneys filter out fluids and it helps regulate your bodies temperature on a hot day. The beauty of this whole process is that you, the benefactor of all these great gifts, donâ?(TM)t have to think about any of these common body functions. They happen automatically. That is why it is called your Autonomic Nervous System.

Now, what happens if the signal from the brain becomes garbled. What if the nerves become pinched between the brain and the organ it innervates. This is where your Doctor of Chiropractic comes in. He is trained to find the spinal segment, vertebra, which is blocking the signal from the brain. Then he will give a spinal adjustment to eliminate the nerve pressure and help the organ return to normal function.

Your body has two separate and distinct nervous systems, the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous systems. One speeds up body functions. It will make your heart race, make you perspire when youâ?(TM)re nervous and cause our stomach to produce too much acid. The other nervous system slows the function of the organ down. Together they act as a break and an accelerator in your body. The chart below shows both parts of the Autonomic Nervous System and shows you how all major organs of the body get their signals from the brain. Please notice that each organ gets two signals from the brain. One signal from a Sympathetic nerve and one from a Parasympathetic nerve.

The primary treatment for spinal dysfunction (subluxation) is a procedure known as spinal manipulation or what the patient calls an adjustment. An adjustment is the procedure used by your Chiropractor to relieve pressure on spinal nerves caused by a misalignment of the spine. The result is reduced pain to the spinal segment and restored function to the irritated nerves. In addition to the spinal adjustment the Chiropractor may use therapies such as ultra sound, or muscle stimulation. He may also recommend specific exercises or nutritional supplements to help speed healing. Should it be determined that another type of health care would benefit healing, a referral to the appropriate provider will be made.
